Overview
Whether you aspire to play Bach or Alicia Keys, I will help you become the pianist you want to be. I will introduce you to the fundamentals of sight reading, technique, and theory, and incorporate your favourite songs into your lessons.
You do not need a piano at home to take lessons; a simple full-size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first six months.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the #1 reason to learn to play the piano at Muswell Hill Piano Academy?
I get to know each student and parent on a personal level. I work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and your favourite type of music. Whether you're playing in a local band, you’re a twenty year old taking your first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the piano after many years, together we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.
What styles of music do you teach?
I teach all styles, from rock, pop and jazz, to country, blues and classical.
How qualified are you as a piano instructor?
I entered the Royal Academy of Music 1988 to study the harpsichord and piano. During my studies, I began teaching piano lessons whilst continuing to perform in regular harpsichord concerts, before deciding to dedicate myself to teaching full time. I now have over 33 years experience teaching in North London, with my students ranging from beginners to graduate students, and aged from 4 and upwards.
During my teaching career I have continued to develop and extend my teaching skills, taking ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) courses, and other courses in Jazz, Pop and Latin styles, and teaching early years.
Do I have to know how to read music?
No. Beginners are welcome!
Do I need a piano to learn the instrument?
No, you do not need a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first 6 months.
How long does it take to learn how to play the piano?
There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn to play the piano. With regular practice, a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
